One group of determined youngsters recently raised $1,000 to give to the Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge. What makes this remarkable is these eighth graders are in a program at Memorial Middle School in Medford for students with Asperger’s syndrome.
The nine students raised the money with a walk-a-thon around the track at Memorial in May. Many of the sponsors were so impressed that when the walking was finished, they gave the students even more than they pledged.
“It was more than we anticipated,” said head teacher Kate Brodsky, who has taught in the Y.A.L.E. School Program at Memorial for eight years. “The kids were thrilled when we got the final number. They were jumping up and down.”
