May 12th – May 18th, 2019, was Special Education Week in New Jersey

Painting a Brighter Future,One Step at a Time!

Special Education Week in New Jersey was another success! Each year, Special Education Week is commemorated by Proclamation of the New Jersey State Legislature. It’s a chance for students, families, school administrators and decision-makers to celebrate special education services, special education programs, and most importantly, the special education teachers who make it possible for children with disabilities to learn effectively and to reach their full potential in their families and communities.

Special Education Week in New Jersey is co-sponsored by ASAH and the New Jersey School Boards Association. This year’s theme, “Painting a Brighter Future, One Step at a Time,” celebrated the creativity and teamwork that’s creating positive outcomes for students with disabilities.

The weeklong celebration was marked by a luncheon event at which the spirit and goals of quality special education are recognized and honored. The luncheon featured student musical performances, awards to special education teachers and programs at public and private schools that have developed innovative special education programs, and several academic scholarships presented to special education students who demonstrated particular achievement during the past year.

The event also featured juried awards to student artists for artwork that captures the spirit of special education as they experience it. Posted below is a gallery of this year’s winning artworks.

ASAH and the New Jersey School Boards Association, are very grateful for the corporate support provided by their Special Education Week grant sponsors.

Schools Get Involved and Raise Awareness

In addition to our traditional commemorative event and recognitions, ASAH helped member schools get involved in raising awareness of the important role private schools play in meeting students’ needs.
