Governor Christie has signed a package of bills that will benefit students with reading difficulties. Under the new requirements, young children who are showing signs of reading problems will have to be screened for dyslexia within the first few months of second grade.
The bill, S-2442, was part of a legislative package aimed at improving identification of and support for children with the disability. The bills were the result of recommendations by the New Jersey Reading Disabilities Task Force. Other bills signed by the governor established requirements for professional development and a new certification for teachers of students with reading disabilities.
