WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW (*)

Appropriate special education rests on the foundation of a properly drafted Individualized Education Program (IEP). Unfortunately, not enough attention is paid to the development of IEPs, and as a result services are often delivered in an inconsistent and haphazard manner. This workshop will focus on documenting the services and supports a student is entitled to, along with the proper drafting of goals and objectives. Common pitfalls to be avoided and collaborative advocacy tips will also be discussed. Attendees should walk away feeling prepared to advocate for their child and secure an ironclad IEP. This 75-minute presentation includes a Q&A for attendees.

MAXIMIZING SERVICES DURING THE TRANSITION YEARS
SPEAKER: Paul Prior, Esq., Hinkle, Prior and Fischer, Attorneys at Law
Under federal law, students as young as age 14 are entitled to IEP goals that focus on the skills that they will need to transition from school to independent living, employment, further education, or whatever else is appropriate for the student. Many IEPs are formulated with no attention paid to what skills the student will need to be successful when his or her school entitlement ends. Additionally, all students with disabilities are entitled to receive special education and related services until the end of the school year in which they turn 21. All too often school districts attempt to graduate students before age 21, without the skills necessary to succeed outside of the school environment. This workshop focuses on how to ensure your student’s transition planning is given a priority and your student is not graduated prematurely. This 75-minute presentation includes a Q&A for attendees.
