This year, ASAH is recruiting and training families to get more engaged in advocacy efforts designed to support private special education. In November and December, ASAH member schools LARC School, Matheny School & Hospital, and The Children’s Institute, hosted the evening events, which were open to parents from any ASAH member school.

A training team from ASAH, which includes ASAH staff, consultants and volunteers, provides parents with the information they need to become more active in system advocacy. The program includes a brief overview of individual advocacy strategies to help preserve existing private school placements – vital information in today’s IEP meeting.

ASAH’s goal is to identify at least one parent from each of New Jersey’s 40 legislative districts. So far more than 50 parent advocates representing 19 districts have stepped forward to become advocates.

This spring, four more parent advocacy programs are scheduled to take place throughout the state. If you would like to sponsor an event at your school, or would like to recommend a parent who might want to get involved, please call Susan Recce at 609-890-1400.
